Zentangle
Contour Drawings
My focus point is a bird perched. The element I incorporated is a branch that gave a platform for the bird to perch on. I included a variety of lines within my piece. An obvious principle I included was value. I used value to emphasize that the bird was the focus point. I used zentangle methodology. I combined deliberate pencil strokes as well as keeping erasing to a limit to comply with the set of rules. To actually complete the piece I used a thin sharpie to give it a bold look. I modified various example designs and edited them to fit into what I was trying to convey. The zentangle website also provided a basis of inspiration. I specially chose a bird because they are my favorite animal. They represent freedom and hope personally. I attempted to portray freedom through the swirls within the piece. I also included flowers to add on to the aesthetic. Some goals that I had as an artist were trying to make the bird as realistic as possible, however I failed. I did not have a set type bird in order to allow the viewers to choose, however it made it hard for me to draw at detailed as possible. I did actually reach the goal of having the viewer choose the type of bird because some of my fellow peers claimed it to be a mockingjay. I learned that lines were not as easy to tweak as I thought they were. A zentangle looks so easy to create, but it's actually quite complex. You cannot finish in an hour, especially if you do not have a set idea. I planned the bird’s image as well as the branch’s, but the background was freelanced. It was difficult to compose the background and I had to research for a second time. This assignment will encourage me to do a better job of researching so that I do not have to waste anymore time. Overall my zentangle came out almost to what I imagined it. I am content with my results.
